Discounts for Paying in Cash
-
After your visit when you have received a bill, you can request a discount if you are paying in cash.

We will teach you how to negotiate your cash payment in order for you to get the best discount:
-
If you are paying immediately after your visit, be sure to ask someone who is in charge of payment one of these questions, be sure to be straightforward with your request:
-
"What is the discounted cash price for this service?"
-
"Do you offer a self-pay discount if I pay in full today with cash, without using my insurance?"
-
-
-
If you are paying after the bill of your visit arrives, first, call the billing department of your healthcare facility early and ask to speak with a billing manager or someone with the authority to negotiate rates
-
Then directly ask for a prompt-pay or a self-pay discount.
-
You can ask: "What is the discounted cash price for this service if I pay in full today?"

Asking For an Itemized Bill
-
After your bill arrives, you can also ask for an itemized bill. This is a great way for both individuals who are insured or uninsured to analyze where your costs are coming from and whether or not you can negotiate them.
-
Call the number on your bill and provide and request for the following:
-
Provide: full name, date of birth, and patient ID
-
Ask for: an itemized statement with billing codes either mailed, emailed, or posted onto your patient portal
-
-
What this does is it provides the CPT codes and more from your visit. Check out this article to understand your medical bills and find out how to spot errors and negotiate your payment that way.
-
Tips
-
Try explaining your financial situation. There are many healthcare providers that are willing to work with you to ensure that you are able to pay your medical bills
-
Remember to stay persistent in calling your healthcare provider. Try asking for different people. This will be the part where you have to negotiate for the discount.
Note
Do note that when you pay in cash, you are agreeing to not submit the claim to your insurance. This is because if you were to use insurance, the provider must charge the insurer’s negotiated rate, and there is no negotiating after that.
Note
-
This is a good choice if you have a high deductible or you only go to occasional appointments that are already low in cost.
-
Please keep in mind that paying in cash means that it will not go towards your insurance deductible nor will it have an out-of-pocket maximum.
